Research Activities
The Department of chemistry came into existence in the year 1971 and over a
period of time, it has emerged as one of the premier Departments not only of
the university, but has also acquired prestigious status even at National
level owing to its academic and research records. The varied courses offered
by this department have made the students resourceful to get placed into
different educational and industrial sectors. The research
activities of the Department embrace versatility and focus on
Synthetic organic chemistry, Supra-molecular chemistry, Structural inorganic
chemistry, Drug design and discovery, Green Chemistry, Catalysis,Material
science, Electrochemistry, Chemistry of surfactants, oils and fats,
Theoretical chemistry, Thermodynamic studies, biophysical chemistry,
structural biology and Analytical chemistry. The faculty of the Department
is involved in various research projects funded by CSIR, UGC, DAE, SERB-DST
and DBT etc. The contribution of the Department has been recognised both
nationally and internationally and the faculty has been awarded FNASc, CRSI
gold, silver and bronze medals, Bhagya Tara award, Prof. M.S. Wadia award,
Brainpool fellow award, Coastal Chemical Society award, Thompson Reuter
Research, Excellence India Citation Award, Commonwealth Academic Fellowship
award, DAAD, JSPS fellowship, Humboldt fellowship and FASc.
The Department has been adopted by the UGC under its Special Assistance
Programme (SAP) and by DST under its programme for improvement of Science
and Technology (FIST). State of the art instruments like NMR, X-ray
diffractometer, HRMS, UV, Flourescence and Atomic absorption spectrometer,
HPLC, DLS, peptide synthesizer, physiosorption, impedance analyser,
tensiometer, polarizing microscope, FTIR-ATR, UV-Visible NIR, DSC,
Polarograph etc. are available for research and teaching. The department has
access to online journals from RSC, ACS, Taylor and Francis, Kluwer
incorporations etc. Several faculty members have exposure to foreign
research laboratories in the form of post-doctoral and visiting scientist
fellowship and are fellows of academic bodies of national/international
repute. The accomplishments of this department are specially attributed to
the collaborative efforts of the teaching faculty, research students and the
non-teaching staff of the department.
